Liverpool approves Investment Zone funding for robotic research laboratories

Liverpool City Region has agreed £10 million of Life Sciences Investment Zone support for new robotic research laboratories intended to accelerate the development and testing of treatments for infectious diseases.

The facilities are planned for Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, working with the Infection Innovation Consortium. They will combine specialist laboratory infrastructure with automation and data technologies to support research into treatments and related medical applications.

The programme is expected to provide high-containment laboratories capable of supporting work involving dangerous pathogens. Regional partners anticipate that the facilities could strengthen Liverpool's role in infection research and attract further investment from industry.

The announcement forms part of the Investment Zone's wider support for life sciences, which includes research spaces, business development and skills programmes. The laboratories were expected to open in 2027 at the time of the announcement.

The confirmed funding represents a significant project commitment. Construction, scientific use and subsequent commercial or health benefits will need to be assessed as the project progresses.
