North East Scotland approves proposed data and AI investment project

The North East of Scotland Investment Zone Joint Committee has approved a business case for a proposed digital technology project intended to support data and artificial intelligence capabilities in the region.

The decision was recorded at the committee meeting on 21 August 2026. The project, described as Empowering Digital Transformation, aims to advance practical uses of data and AI as part of the Investment Zone's work on digital technology and regional business development.

Representatives of the project's sponsoring organisations presented the case and answered questions from committee members. The committee agreed to approve the business case, subject to outstanding technical matters being resolved to the satisfaction of Aberdeenshire Council's Head of Finance.

The approval is one element of the Investment Zone's broader effort to develop digital and green energy strengths through investment, innovation and skills initiatives across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

The approval included a condition, so the proposed data and AI project should be understood as a step in the decision process, not an unconditional award or a completed development. Any further approval and delivery will need to be reported separately.
